If you run a shopping website, an email mailing list is a must.
There are so many websites out there, you need to do everything you
can to keep hold of your customers. The majority of web surfers
won't buy from the first website they visit. They like to shop
around and re-visit the same website a number of times before they
feel comfortable about parting with their money.
It is also widely believed that it costs several times more to
convert a new customer than it is an existing one. Targeting
the same potential customer three times is a much more effective
approach than targeting three different customers just the once.
Some customers might also want to re-order from you but simply
cannot remember your website address. Or perhaps they are so
busy that they just "haven't got round to it yet". An email
dropping into their in-folder will remind them of your existence,
plus also give them a welcome distraction from their work.
Ways to Add Email Addresses to your List
- Run competitions
- Offer exclusive discounts to members
- Go through past orders and enquiries and add their email to
your list
Newsletter Content
If you are not sure what to put in your newsletter, try
subscribing to newsletters of other websites. What are their
strengths? What do you like about them? Would you
purchase from the company? What don't you like? How
could you do better? What are they writing about? How
frequently are they sending out newsletters? Daily, weekly,
monthly or not at all?
Some email list providers also have the function to allow
customers to enter details of birthdays, anniversaries etc.
You can then automatically remind them of this event and suggest
they visit your website for gift ideas.
I am by no means an expert on the subject and have a lot of room
for improvement. However I am reading up on the subject all
the time, deepening my knowledge and trying things out. I hope
that some of this information can be of help to you.
